Publications

Introduction

The broad range of publications of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen provide detailed access to the collections and are also a forum for the results of research efforts. Exhibitions are accompanied by catalogues, and the collections explored in depth through collection catalogues and specialized individual publications, which are also frequently dedicated to other research topics. Here you will find an overview.

JACOBUS VREL. LOOKING FOR CLUES OF AN ENIGMATIC PAINTER

FIRST MONOGRAPH AND CATALOGUE RAISONNÉ REVEALS THE ARTIST'S FASCINATING OEUVRE

His pictures look rather odd, his figures introverted and his street scenes curiously stage-like. Jacobus Vrel appears to record everyday life in the Dutch Republic during the 17th century, yet creates miraculous worlds at the same time.
The painter himself is like a phantom. In spite of years of research, the mystery surrounding his identity remains unsolved. We only know his name from a single contemporary inventory and from the signatures on his 50-surviving works, which can scarcely be compared with those of his contemporaries. Vrel was a pioneer in his field. In their austerity and sometimes oppressive silence, his paintings seem unexpectedly modern, and it is for that reason that they are compared with the work of Vilhelm Hammershøi.
With detective-like investigations from the authors, and extensive technical examinations of the paintings, this monograph explores the enigmatic pictures of an artist whose works were once thought to have been created by Vermeer. The volume’s three editors, Bernd Ebert, Cécile Tainturier and Quentin Buvelot, present a monograph-cum-catalogue raisonné that examines Vrel’s oeuvre from different angles and contributes significantly to our understanding of this elusive painter.

The present publication is the result of an international research project that brought together the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich, the Fondation Custodia, Frits Lugt Collection in Paris and the Mauritshuis in The Hague, working in close cooperation with numerous international specialists from a variety of disciplines.
Despite the growing interest in Vrel’s work, the artist has thus far been denied a monographic exhibition. An exhibition on the artist was planned for 2020-2021, but the project had to be postponed because of COVID-19. There are new plans for an exhibition in The Hague and Paris for 2023. This fall Vrel’s Street Scene with People Conversing will be launched at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich as a new acquisition by the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, purchased with the generous support of the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung.

Königsklasse IV

The accompanying publication to the exhibition "Königsklasse IV" shows the unique connection that contemporary art makes with the unfinished historical rooms in Herrenchiemsee Palace. Dan Flavin, John Chamberlain, Andy Warhol, Arnulf Rainer or Jean-Michel Basquiat are just a few of the artists whose works are staged in an extraordinary way in this volume.

With Herrenchiemsee Palace, which he had built in the style of Versailles, King Louis II expressed his attachment to the French King Louis XIV. The cultural boost it gave to the place is illustrated by an essay by the renowned literary scholar Barbara Vinken. With linguistic power, she describes the connection between the two unequal kings and makes the link to the expressive diversity of contemporary art. These exciting contrasts are also highlighted by impressive photographs of the exhibition architecture. Works such as Wolfang Laib's sculptures made of beeswax or Dan Flavin's installation made of fluorescent tubes can thus be experienced by the viewer in a new context.

Georg Baselitz

Georg Baselitz's various creative phases are exemplified by 31 of his masterpieces that are held within the Bavarian State Painting Collections. The volume analyses for the first time these important paintings and sculptures within the context of the history of the collection, which has been shaped not only by the artist’s outstanding supporters and collectors, including Duke Franz von Bayern, but also by the passionate commitment of the directors and curators of the museum.

In 1972, when Tern became the first work by Georg Baselitz to enter the Bavarian State Painting Collections, a first step was made towards building an epochal collection of the artist's paintings and sculptures. Today, 47 years later, the museum is dedicating the present extensive publication to this main focus within its holdings, which has been built up over the past decades. It spotlights one of the pinnacles of its collection of art after 1945, whose outstanding profile in the international museum landscape is also characterised by unique holdings of works by Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke, Arnulf Rainer and Fred Sandback.

Katalog "VAN DYCK"

Accompanying the exhibition is an extensively illustrated catalogue in German edition, which presents all exhibits in detail. The book traces the impressive artistic development of the painter from his beginnings, through his journey to Italy, to his reputation at the court of the English king. It is based on a research project lasting several years, in which fifty works from the Bavarian State Painting Collections were examined in detail in order to gain insight into the origin of the paintings and the development of the artist, but also into the organisation of the workshop.

The Alte and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich rank among the great galleries of the world. Their comprehensive collections trace the development of art across history: from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the rise of Romanticism, Realism and Impressionism, all the way up to the birth of Modernism. They were built and maintained by Ludwig I of Bavaria and the heirs to the throne from the 19th century onwards. Now after almost 500 years of collecting activity and continuous patronage by the Wittelsbach dynasty and numerous bourgeois art lovers, they contain an immense collection of which hundreds of the most important works are constantly to see.

Director‘s Choice 2

The Modern Art Collection (Sammlung Moderne Kunst) at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich is one of the world's leading institutions for painting, sculpture, photography and new media. The spectrum ranges from the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century to contemporary art. In the incomparably rich collection of Expressionists, the Cubist and Futuristic re-definition of autonomous art challenges the question of man's changed circumstances in the modern age. The artists of the 'Brücke' and the 'Blaue Reiter', along with Max Beckmann, who is uniquely represented here, address this issue eloquently. Pablo Picasso's pictorial fantasies and formal richness of invention are highlighted, along with Surrealists like Max Ernst, René Magritte and Salvador Dalí. Important themes after 1950 are debated in the works by Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin, Georg Baselitz and others. This volume offers the author's refreshingly personal perspective on these subjects and highlights the iconic works in this world-class collection.

The Pinakothek Museums in Bavaria

The Pinakothek Museums in Bavaria comprise the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek, and the Pinakothek der Moderne that, together, house an extensive collection of art from the old masters to the twenty-first century. Visitors come from all corners of the globe to view the Pinakothek's Bavarian State Painting Collections. But, in addition to the many paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and installation art housed within the three museums, art from the Pinakothek, including some of the collection's most important hidden treasures, is also on display in nineteen galleries beyond the region's boundaries.
The Pinakothek Museums in Bavaria is the first book to take readers through all nineteen galleries that showcase the Bavarian State Painting Collections more broadly, from the Schleissheim Palace in Oberschleissheim, with paintings by Nicolas Poussin, to St. Catherine's Church at Augsburg, which features works by Hans Holbein, to a gallery in Neuburg an der Donau that holds works by Peter Paul Rubens. Traveling with the director of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Bernhard Maaz, we are treated to works of breathtaking beauty and historical significance by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Max Beckmann, Joseph Beuys, Albrecht Dürer, Paul Klee, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Auguste Rodin, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol, among many others. But the book also draws attention to the galleries themselves, including the finest castles and palaces of Bavaria.
With more than one hundred color illustrations and contributions by Pinakothek keepers and curators, the book sheds light on this internationally renowned collection.
